No Justification for Smith’s Incidentally True Beliefs

چکیده
Abstract Edmund Gettier (1963) argued that there can be justified true belief ( JTB ) is not knowledge. The correctness of Gettier’s argument questioned by showing S mith his famous examples does earn justification for incidentally beliefs, while a doxastically more conscientious person would come to hold but false beliefs. So, (and analogous) cases do result in and belief. This due tension between deductive closure evidential support. For being justified, any believing, disbelieving, or withholding deductively inferred propositions must distributed proportionally given proportionality principle has primacy over case conflict. Beliefs and Evidence in Justification Models
In this paper we focus on the formal qualitative representation of an agent’s evidence and justification in support of her beliefs and knowledge. Our formal setting is based on ‘justification models’, which we introduce as a generalization of the so-called ‘evidence models’ proposed by J. van Benthem and E. Pacuit in [18]. We use these structures to express how an agent’s evidence supports her ...
متن کاملYoung children have difficulty ascribing true beliefs.
Using the format of a false belief task (Wimmer & Perner, 1983), we investigated the ability of 88 3- and 4-year-olds to ascribe a previously held true belief to a story protagonist. In an unexpected transfer task, children found true belief ascription as difficult as false belief ascription even though they could answer memory questions about story details. Results are discussed in relation to...
متن کاملNo . 1896 Justification of Stable Equilibria
Two assumptions are used to justify selection of equilibria in stable sets. One assumption requires that a selected set is invariant to addition of redundant strategies. The other is a strong version of backward induction. Backward induction is interpreted as the requirement that behavior strategies in an extensive-form game are sequentially rational and conditionally admissible at every inform...
متن کاملLay denial of knowledge for justified true beliefs.
Intuitively, there is a difference between knowledge and mere belief. Contemporary philosophical work on the nature of this difference has focused on scenarios known as "Gettier cases." Designed as counterexamples to the classical theory that knowledge is justified true belief, these cases feature agents who arrive at true beliefs in ways which seem reasonable or justified, while nevertheless s...
متن کاملHazardous Waste Recycling: No Justification for Toxic Trade
Very quickly following the first international toxic waste trade scandals that took place in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the environmentally friendly word “ recycling” began to increasingly be used by waste traders to justify the export of hazardous wastes from rich to poorer countries. Today, this rationalization for toxic waste trade for industrial wastes continues. Virtually all existing...
